Perdita was first spotted by Voyager 2 in 1986, but it went unnoticed until 1999, when Erich Karkoschka found it. There was no proof of its existence besides that photo, so it was demoted. However, in 2003, the Hubble Space Telescope saw Perdita, and it was later reinstated as an official moon of Uranus.
It was named after a character in William Shakespeare's play "The Winter's Tale".
