The dwarf planet Eris was discovered in January 2005 by a team lead by Mike Brown. It was thought to be larger than Pluto, which was classified as a Planet at the time, which sparked the discussion of whether or not this object should be classified as a planet or not. It resulted in the creation of a new group, the dwarf planets. (smaller planets) Because of the debate it caused, it was named after the Roman goddess of strife and discord.
